धर्मार्थनैपुणै: distinguished in the twin aspects of dharma and artha श्रेष्ठै: by the best, द्विजै: by brahmins, अभिविनीत: wellinstructed in all the matters, ग्रामार्थे for the sake of a village, नगरस्य वा or a town, यदा when, सङ्ग्रामम् the battle, व्रजति proceeds, सौमित्रिसहित: along with Lakshmana, गत्वा having gone, अविजित्य without conquering, न निवर्तते does not return.

Whenever he, wellinstructed in all matters by the best of brahmins wellversed in dharma and artha proceeds along with Lakshmana to wage a war for the sake of a village or a town, he never returns without conquering the enemy.
